Dirt Jumper Mike Montgomery has announced a plan to capture two mountain biking jump world records this fall in Mammoth, Ca.. One record that Montgomery wants to capture is the the longest jump ever landed. A feet that would require jumping further than the current record of 150ft. held by Nathan Rennie. The second record that Montgomery will attempt is the longest flip jump. A 120ft challenge while executing a back flip.
In order to clear the massive distance, Montgomery will need to reach speeds near 90 mph. Current record holder Nathan Rennie used a motorcycle tow to obtain the necessary speed. Montgomery has not yet announced how he will achieve the required speed but with wind resistance a major factor, it seems only logical that two wheel tow would be required.
When interviewed about his plan, Montgomery shared that he has been talking with other extreme athletes about equipment requirements and other technical details of his attempt. One of the suggestions he received was to partially fill the inner tubes with water. The extra weight will help stabilize the rotating wheel while in the air as centrifugal force pushes the water outward.
Montgomery is a documented competitor around the world and is an accomplished MTB dirt jumper and slopestyle rider is no stranger to big air. Mike has jumped (with a flip) in excess of 78' on a hard tail mountain bike and has jumped over 180ft on his motorcycle.
The record attempt is scheduled for September 23-24th.
