If you thought you saw it all, think again. A little company called Spurcycle went and reinvented the bike bell. My first impression of their email was...great, another email from some Asian manufacturer wanting me to buy 5,000 units of junk. Until you look at the pictures of the product. Then you kind of take notice that it looks like its pretty damned well made, badass even - for a bell that is. As someone who would not normally look to put a bell on his bike, I found myself wanting one. It is simple, clean and is every bit as bling as my bike and apparently has a phenomenal sound. Best of all- its made in the good ol US of A. Now before we got to that point I know everyone of my single speed buddies and friends that can be in the saddle for days on end without getting rash already wanted one, but now, I got to have one.
One thing you can count on is that it won't be cheap. And, it isn't. But it is super cool and I'd chunk down $35 bills to get one. Call it a present to myself and hopefully music to my ears as a blow by the hikers on my favorite trail. Maybe it will even sooth the hiker rage? That may be asking too much of the little bell but I can dream. Want to get one of your own? They have already sold more that 5X there launch target number.
You can pre-order them on kickstarter (a web site for start ups) Here is the link...and tell em Bicycle World TV sent you..http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/139160027/a-better-bicycle-bell-made-in-the-usa.
See the official press Release below for more details on the piece of bar jewelry and how it was developed.
SPURCYCLE REINVENTS THE BICYCLE BELL
(August 6, 2013) SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., – – Spurcycle, a bicycle accessory company that brought the world GripRings, a comfy, durable grip system that can be custom configured to suit any bike, has now modernized the bicycle bell. With the launch today of a project on Kickstarter.com, Spurcycle has made public their design for the Ringer, a bell that produces powerful sound from a trim, precise form. Spurcycle’s bell is available in two versions—raw finish and stealth black—for pledges starting at $35 (with free shipping to the U.S.). The Ringer will deliver to supporters within 60 days of project completion.
“After our successful GripRings Kickstarter project, we turned our eyes toward a complete reinvention of the simple bicycle bell,” said Spurcycle co-founder Clint Slone. “All sorts of riders with high-end bikes have been reluctant to mount a bell on their bars, simply because no bell exists that matches the elegance and quality of a performance bike. With the Ringer, we’ve made that bell and believe our Kickstarter project will quickly reach its goal.”
Crafted in the United States from brass and stainless steel, the Ringer is a better bicycle bell thanks to a design based on acute rider insight, premium materials, high-quality manufacturing and in-house assembly. The Ringer features a streamlined shape, an incredibly clean, yet highly adjustable mount and an easily activated and modulated hammer. The sound made by a Ringer is effective without being harsh; it was tuned with the help of a New England company that has been making bells since the Industrial Revolution.
Ah so clean and helpful..
