Would you race your mountain bike in the highest mountains in the world? How about if it was set in one of the worlds most mystical and remote locations?
That's the challenge put forth by the 10th edition of "MTB Himalaya" presented by Hero bikes. A fairly obscure event that has been slowly gaining momentum and now, in its 10th year is set to go big.
Even though previous years have already seen former Tour de France racers and top UCI riders compete, the organizers are taking this years event to a new level. For this years race the organizers are putting up $16,000 in US prize money to be distributed in 16 different participation categories ensuring that every achievement gets rewarded. The organizers have done a great job of lining up some cool product sponsors too.
The race courses numbers look like a formidable challenge too. Spanning 8 days (6 riding - 2 rest days) to cover 500 KM / 320 miles and climb 12,500 mtr / 41,250 ft, and set against a magical Himalayan back drop, this event should be moving to the top of many racers to-do list.
With a maximum altitude of 10,230 the fully supported race will include competitors from around the world (15 countries last year) and include competitors from the Indian Army and other armed forces who train at such altitudes on a regular basis.
Like most of adventure races of this length, the terrain will vary and include Off-road, Broken Tarmac, Gravel, Rocks, Mud, Sand, Lose Rock and Single track.
What sets this race apart from most other races is the remote location and consistently higher altitude. Judging by the pictures, there is a variety of terrain and the event continues to fuel the momentum of the Indian riding community.
Daily event coverage can be found here on Bicycle World TV - but it would be better to experience the event yourself. All you have to do is sign up! Here - http://www.mtbhimalaya.com/
