But it didn't come easy. Andrew endured years of 4th place finishes and crashes before making his podium debut. And what a debut it was, skipping right past all the smaller steps and going straight to the top. If the competition wasn't steep enough, the weather played havoc all weekend with thunder, lightning and rain delaying the final qualifying runs and pushing the finals to Monday. Speaking with the riders, they said "it is difficult to get into a flow when the weather deals you a stop and go scenario. But everyone has to deal with it, so it's all good." After the weather cleared, the riders were rewarded with hero dirt conditions and nicely packed lines to hit for the finals.
It was refreshing to see a number of different lines being taken with 20 riders on the hill. Judging would have been tough as the competition was extremely close. In watching the event I was personally impressed by Cam Zink and Kyle Straights line dropping it. It was super sketchy and vertical right out of the gate and impressive to watch in real Free Style fashion. Zink went on to finish second and take the best trick award for his 360 off a massive drop. Brendan Semenuk took third place and locked up the FMB world championship with his result.
