One of cycling's most loved and admired road racers Jens Voigt broke the One Hour Cycling record as his career ending performance in a Swiss Velodrome.
Anyone who has ridden a bike at any pace for any length of time can and should appreciate what Voigt accomplished. The ability to stay seated in an aero position while pacing themselves at a clip that would allow them to go the maximum distance in one hour is amazing. The mental discipline required to handle those conditions and suffer in the pain cave for that long is impressive.
Voigt used this effort to complete a 20 year career as a pro cyclist. At 43 years old, Voigt time trialed his way around the velodrome with the consistency of a Swiss watch to ride 51.115 kilometers. The accomplishment will probably open the doors for future champions to try to better the record. Fabian Cancellara for one has mentioned his interest in the record. But today was Voigt's day and the perfect capstone to a storied carrier.
