Madison, Wis. – Feb. 6, 2014 – Mongoose, a brand of Dorel Industries (TSX: DII.B, DII.A), is proud to announce that Mike Montgomery and Greg Watts have joined the expanding Mongoose mountain bike team. Montgomery and Watts, slopestyle and dirt jumpers, will play essential roles in product development, while continuing to advance the sport. Watts and Montgomery will join, Chris Akrigg, to form the 2014 Mongoose Mountain Team.
In 2013, Montgomery dominated taking top honors at the Ranchstyle Slopestyle as well as Best Trick at the Crankworx Teva Best Trick Showdown. He placed second at the GoPro Mountain Games Slopestyle. He also grabbed gold at the 2011 Teva Mountain Games Slopestyle competition. Montgomery continues to rapidly progress in slopestyle, with his technical bag of tricks and fearless attitude.
“It’s an honor to sign with Mongoose, a brand that has played a major role in shaping our sport,” said Montgomery. “Mongoose cares about their athletes and provides us with the support we need to achieve our goals.”
Hailing from San Diego, California, Montgomery began racing BMX at 5 years-old. After competing in a handful of top-level BMX events, including Dew Tour, Montgomery decided to make the switch to mountain biking after watching a video of a hardtail biker. Since that day, Montgomery has been a regular on the mountain bike podium and has left his mark on the sport by inventing tricks such as the California Roll and the Backflip Bar-Hop to late Tailwhip.
Watts also excels in mountain bike slopestyle, both in competition and in films. In 2013, he was crowned the champion at Mammoth Kamikaze Bike Games Speed and Style. He also took top honors at AT’s Showdown in 2010 and 2011, Ranchstyle in 2011, Goatstyle in 2010 and Crankworx Slopestyle in 2009.
“It is an awesome opportunity to partner with a brand with so much history,” commented Watts. “I’m stoked to have a role in the creative process and help design bikes for the next generation of Mongoose riders.”
Raised in Santa Cruz, California, Watts has been on a bike since the age of 3. After testing the waters in BMX racing, he decided to dabble in mountain and entered his first race at 14. By his senior year of high school, Watts had reached pro status in his mountain bike career. The up-and-comer made history after landing the first Double Backflip on a mountain bike, and continues to add to his arsenal of tricks showing he isn’t afraid to push the limits of his mountain riding.
