Cycling Picture Book - The Perfect Gift

We are always on the lookout for good books on cycling. Especially when they are based on the history of the sport, when men were men and simply surviving the grand tours of Europe was success. A new book by Velo Press called Goggles & Dust is a photo - chronical of the 20's and 30's grand tours in Europe. Goggles & Dust is filled with wonderful images from The Horton Collection, the premier photography house of historical cycling photos. The book includes many magical names that many have heard of but possibly never seen. The story is a well rounded account of the men that made the sport what it is today.

This book is also amazing because of what it took for the photographers to capture the images in often times severe conditions. As a photographer, I appreciate that they didn't have digital cameras and a memory cards. These photos are not only well shot, but they only got one chance to capture their subject on film! Then the film on which they were using had to survive the journeys back to the developing room.

I wish the book was larger, but it is remarkable no less and would make a great coffee table book or perfect holiday present the cyclist in your life.

Filled with 100 images, this hardback book is at a very nice price too.

Here are some photos and the official press release on the book.

The Horton Collection

Drawn from the one of the world’s finest collections of cycling artifacts, Goggles & Dust collects over 100 stunning photographs from competitive cycling’s heyday. Spanning the 1920s and ’30s, Goggles & Dust: Images from Cycling’s Glory Days celebrates the grit and determination of the bicycle racing pioneers who established the records, traditions, and distinct flavors of Europe’s most hallowed races.

The spirit of these hardy competitors was perhaps matched only by the resolve of the remarkable photographers who prevailed in all imaginable conditions, situations, altitudes and latitudes to capture unforgettable prints of the racers at work and play. From Alpine panoramas to hair-raising crashes and idyllic roadside celebrations, the gorgeous restored photographs in Goggles & Dust—most unseen since their original publication in the newspapers and magazines of the day—provide an indelible and delightful record of a more carefree and adventurous time.
